Anne B. Kernan-Grunzke, MD

Dr. Kernan was born and grew up in Minnesota.  She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from the College of St. Catherine in 1989.  Dr. Kernan earned her medical degree from the University of Southern California in 1996 and completed her pediatric residency at the Los Angeles County + University of Southern California Medical Center in 1999.  She has been a practicing private pediatrician ever since and joined Pediatric Associates of Alexandria in 2005.

Dr. Kernan is a member of the pediatric staff at Inova Alexandria and Inova Fairfax hospitals.  She has been Board Certified in Pediatrics since 1999 and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.  Dr. Kernan has had a special interest in mental health since medical school.  In May of 2016, after taking additional training through Inova and the REACH Institute, Dr. Kernan began offering anxiety, depression and behavioral evaluations at PAA.  Dr. Kernan will be completing STAT Autism training in April of 2026.  She will be offering evaluations for children under the age of four with developmental concerns for autism upon the completion of her training.

Dr. Kernan has two grown children and enjoys traveling with her husband in her free time.  She is an avid reader and speaks medical Spanish.
